On The Road
I met Buddy Hooper & Mike Fred in July of 1978 when I was a young 18 year old midwestern boy from Indianapolis,Indiana. I was on my first motorcycle adventure traveling to the west coast to see the country and experience life. On route back from California by happenstance I met Buddy & Mike both on motorcycles and heading back home to Guymon. We shared time and experiences on the road and I was invited to stay over and get refreshed in Guymon as I would continue my journey back to Indy. What a time in Guymon. It was no surprise to me that the company of Buddy and Mike on the road the past few days would carry on to my visit in Guymon. I recall an old hotel building that a bar that was going to open in (The Smiling Dog)and the opening was in a couple of days. Once Buddy and Mike got in town plans were made for a private party before the opening. I met Lawrence Junk Benny and several others. I still have a picture of myself, Mike Fred Buddy Hooper, and a few others I can't name standing next to a Jeep Pick up on a dirt road street in Guymon. I could tell Buddy was well liked and I can say that as I was a special guest to these guys we all were treated like rock stars. Buddy and I stayed in touch throughout the years and he was a special guest here in Indy for the "500" back in maybe 97-98. I gave him my Harley when he got here and said "Go check out Indy" he did and we had a great time. It was years later and we still stayed in touch from time to time. When you have experiences and meet people that will never be replicated it is always nice to still have them around knowing the opportunities to reminisce are always possible. I just found out about Buddy's passing and the last time we spoke was when Cole was a junior at Brown University. so that is how long ago. He was proud as could be of his son. I'm not much of a social media person but to friends and family of Buddy Hooper I share your loss and feel free to contact me. Marty Sheets Thorntown ,Indiana martysheets1395@sbcglobal.net
